Left Hand - Arapaho

Left Hand 1840-1911

Left Hand (NIWOT or NAWAT) was born in 1840 in to the Waquithi (Bad Faces) band of the Southern Arapaho.
He succeeded to famous chief Little Raven after his death in 1889. Left Hand was not relative of the most important chief Left Hand that was heavyly wounded at "Sand Creek" in 1864.
Already in his childhood he was a fierce warrior and a buffalo hunter.
He stayed in peace after he had signed the Medicine Lodge's treaty in 1867. He visited several times Washington and there he defended the rights of his people.
In 1908 he gave the command to chief Bird Chief.
He died in 20 June 1911, almost blind, living on the piece of land that the Government had allotted to him, near Geary (Oklahoma).
