Lean Bear - Southern Cheyenne

Lean Bear 1813-1863

Born in 1813. Southern Cheyenne. Indian's name: A'WON I NAH'KU. In 1858, in a war party, his band captured a Ute's woman and her child. Following, the woman escape but the child rested with the new family and he became a famous warrior named Yellow Nose. In 1861, Lean Bear signed the treaty of Fort Wise and in 1863 visited Washington. In 16 May 1863, he and another chief named Star, wearing medal peace, gone out from them village on Smoky Hill River, came towards the military repart commander by Ltd. G. Eayre; suddendly, the soldiers began to shoot with a gun killing the two peace chiefs.
