Satank (also known as Sitting
Bear) 1810-1871
Satank (Set-Angya) was born in 1810 on Arkansas
River in to a Kiowa tribe. He was also known with the name Sitting Bear.
He belonged to military society of "Kaitsenko". He was one of
the most important chiefs that signed the treaty between Kiowa and Southern
Cheyenne in 1840. Since that moment, the two tribes together with Comanche
and Arapaho, fought united against the whites. In 1867 he signed the treaty
of "Medicine Lodge": his presence and oratory made a great impression
to the reporters present. In 1870, his son was killed during a war party
in Texas; he recovered the remains and put them in a bundle which he carried
with him on a horse. The pundle was always with him.
In May 1871, together with Satanta and Big Tree, they attacked a wagon-train
near Graham (Texas), killing 7 men and stealing 41 mules. For this, he
was arrested. On May 28th 1871, during the travel towards the trial he
managed to free himself and wounded one of the guards, but he got shooted
by corpral John B. Charlton. Satank was buried like a dog, somewhere along
the road near Fort Sill.
