Satank - Kiowa

Satank (also known as Sitting Bear) 1810-1871

Satank (Set-Angya) was born in 1810 on Arkansas River in to a Kiowa tribe. He was also known with the name Sitting Bear.
He belonged to military society of "Kaitsenko". He was one of the most important chiefs that signed the treaty between Kiowa and Southern Cheyenne in 1840. Since that moment, the two tribes together with Comanche and Arapaho, fought united against the whites. In 1867 he signed the treaty of "Medicine Lodge": his presence and oratory made a great impression to the reporters present. In 1870, his son was killed during a war party in Texas; he recovered the remains and put them in a bundle which he carried with him on a horse. The pundle was always with him.
In May 1871, together with Satanta and Big Tree, they attacked a wagon-train near Graham (Texas), killing 7 men and stealing 41 mules. For this, he was arrested. On May 28th 1871, during the travel towards the trial he managed to free himself and wounded one of the guards, but he got shooted by corpral John B. Charlton. Satank was buried like a dog, somewhere along the road near Fort Sill.
