Charging Bear 1837-1918

Charging Bear (MATO WATHAKPE) was born in 1837 in to the Sihasapa (Blackfeet) subdivision of Sioux tribe. He was also called John Grass by many whites. He partecipated in Little Big Horn battle, but shortly after decided to stay in peace with the whites. He spend a lot of his adult life in Standing Rock Agency, especially occuping himself of farming-sector developement.
Later, in the reservation, he became a political antagonist of chief Sitting Bull; he signed the sale of several Indian territories in 1889, against the opinion of the great chief.
Thanks to his collaboration with the withes, he became a Reservations judge and accomplished in this task for 30 years.
He died in 1918.
