The Cree Nation is very widely distributed, ranging over territory from Alberta to Quebec. They moved into the west from the vicinity of James Bay to trap furs for the Hudson's Bay Company, which brought them into conflict with other Native Peoples already living there, including the Blackfoot. The culture of the Cree was based on the woodland economy of hunting and trapping, but those who remained in the west quickly adapted to the equestrian hunting culture of the prairies. These became the Prairie Cree. They were constantly at odds with the Blackfoot until the 1870s.
